Scenery and personal stories excellent
Scenery and personal stories excellent. Clare Balding is an excellent ambassador for longer distance leisure cycling and a pleasant change for the committed cyclist and the new-comer. The infectious enthusiasm of the people interviewed and the interviewer comes across very naturally on these DVDs. I wish there were more programmes about cycling for pleasure.

An excellent tale but...
The film was based on the book by Clifton James, but took a number of liberties with the truth. The farcical end of the film version was not nearly good enough. The real ending had James left to his own devices to find his way home with no money and no support. Once home he was treated shamefully by the authorities and forbidden to tell anyone about the venture, not even his wife. No mention of her is made in the film. No mention either of the fact that James had a missing finger on his right hand and he had to have a prosthetic one made in a rush so the deception could go ahead successfully. The film was an entertaining version of an astonishing story, and I was glad to see the man who wrote the book play his part so well in the screen version.
