Portable Monster!
2 of 3 found this helpful The PlayStation Portable (Dubbed PSP) is Sony's first venture into the portable, handheld gaming market, and what a fine job they've done.
The PSP has several key features, such as..
Games: Games will vary for the PSP. Some games will be 3D, while others will be 2-Dimensional. Some games allow Online play via built-in Wireless 802.ll connectivity, but a Wireless Router is required; Additionally, some games can be played with near-by PSP owners without the need for a Wireless router. This is the PSP's ADHOC connection at work, supporting close-range gaming for up to 16 players!
The large, crystal-clear screen provides the utmost clarity and is certainly a treat for the eyes. The newest update from Sony allows PS1 games to be played on the PSP. While you need a PS3 to purchase PS1 titles, it's still a very good addition to this great handheld.
Music: MP3's and WMA music file-types are supported by the PSP. With recent updates such as 3.0 and above, the PSP's Music has been revamped with several nice Visualization that change depending on music.
Movies/Videos: While the only supported format is MP4, this does not really hinder the PSPs ability to present high-quality media, and keep the file sizes low. Conversion sodtware can be freely downloaded from places like PspVideo9.com.
Pictures: The PSP also allows the viewing of small or large Pictures from a wide array of formats. You can't modify pictures, but you can spin them around, Zoom, and set it as the PSP's menu background.
Web Browser/Rss: I use the Web Browser for many things, and it does quite well for a handheld console. there are 3 Tabs in the Web Browser, of which you can scroll between. The PSP minimally supports Flash, albeit a fairly old version. The worst thing about the browser is this: it runs out of available memory quickly with large sites. RSS is nifty to have, but I've not used it. The RSS features allow you to stream Music or Videos over the Internet.
Other: (The following section is relating to Extras you may or may not be able to utilize this portion of the review.)
Homebrew (Internet term for "User created".Not officially supported by Sony.) is a big thing with the PSP. If you have a specific version (1.5 through 2.6) of PSP, you are able to run many downloadable applications from all over the Internet, but with recent Firmware updates, this is impossible. Capabilities in this section range from Calculators to the original Doom (Game by Id software)!
In closing, this is a fine handheld and a superb first step into the market previously dominated by Sony's fierce competitor, Nintendo. Extreme graphics, handy Media capabilities, and wireless connectivity in Games or Internet browsing, This is just a excellent foray into the portable world by Sony with so many features packed into one small, affordable package.
Look out Nintendo, there's a new kid on the block.
