    Battlestar Galactica...in a tin.
Well, I wanted a long running, gutsy sf series...and this certainly fits the bill! Had been put off buying this edition by the price and mixed reviews on Amazon...but still sealed for £50...great! Not sure what to do with the toy Cylon...now if it had been No.6... I think some of the mixed Amazon reviews were a little unfair...maybe the reviewers hadn't figured out just how to access the bonus features...it can take some imagination after a few drinks...and investigating to find that the initial miniseries is at the back of season 1 in the stack... The tin is smart...(personally, I would have preferred a simple box)...but might make a good conversation piece. The disks therin are in very tight cardboard covers slipped over the slimline hard plastic holders for the 4 series...might get tatty with use...but the disks are segregated and protected. At time of writing, I have only got half way through but so far no problems with play and all disks seem to be present. As for whether ALL the bonus contents listed are actually there...well it might take a while to find out...there is a LOT of viewing in this set! As for what you are watching...well, this is not the 'kiddies' series from so long ago. (I did not watch that at the time as it appeared a little assinine...and, looking at the clips from the bonus features...well, those haircuts!). What this series has is drama. Loads of personal issues within the characters, linked to hard edged storylines...often mirroring circumstances which have occurred in our recent history. Some of the mythological aspects feel a little awkward...but it is a story...and they allow the creation of some fast paced combat situations in settings other than on shipboard corridors...and no polystyrene rocks! The space combat sequences...well, they deserve a BIG screen and a good finger on the back button. Hordes of fighters, tracers, missiles...put yourself in there and think "Oh S...!" The big ship casualties are...genuinely tragic...you feel that people are dying in there...whatever their 'species'. This series gives the Cylons a 'human' form...that seem to be what it is all about. But, because the 'human' Cylons are just a different 'branch' of a new evolution, watching the gleeful destruction of disabled Cylon Raiders can put 'Turkey Shoots' from history in a new perspective. This series can make you think. As to how the 'Human' Cylons have evolved from robots...maybe it will be explained somewhere...or I might have to buy 'The Plan' or 'Caprica'...I intend to!. The original series Cylons were guys in suits. New 'robotic' Cylon Centurions are vastly better. Maybe not quite Terminators, but pretty good CG creations. Overall, the 'hard' sf visualisation is pretty spectacular. There are a lot of 'stock shots'...but you can't have new footage all the time. The 'human' characters...some you like, some you don't. Some grate, some you empathise with. A mix. There are stereotypes...but others can develop into suprising complexity. The actors carry it well. 'Sharon', 'Boomer' is outstanding. Tip...dig out the miniseries from back of season 1 first. Feel the sadness as worlds die...the series title music will remind you of the pathos and set you up for the struggle as it continues. How will I feel at the end of the tin...I'm very happy so far...but starting to wish I had spent a lot more money getting a Blue Ray player,a bigger tv and just possibly found a bargain set of the new reissue on ebay! lol.
