Eventually, he moved his tattoo business to Oakland where he became the official tattoo artist for the Hell's Angels. He also wrote erotic novels under the name of Phil Andros, who is also the primary character, and his tales are told in the first person. If you ever find another erotic novelist who quotes Blake and Shakespeare then you might have a work comparable to those of Sam Steward. Steward documented his own life with men and provided his documents to the Kinsey Institute. His life is fascinating and there is a very good biography by Justin Spring.
