Couldn't get to work

Out of the box, loaded app onto phone and plugged in. Phone would not recognize device. Tried reloading app. Inserting and removing several times. Nothing worked. Have read there is a software update you can load, tried to visit site, but it was not well explained and was not able to load. New device, should have had new software. Disappointed. Useless.
