I bought this to replace my Breville scoop/tamper that uses a safety plastic #7, which is tricky because it stands for “other”, which means it may or may not contain BPA.
This Krups scoop/tamper on the other hand, uses a safety plastic #5, which is deemed safe as a Polypropylene (PP); a thermoplastic polymer.
While I take these recommendations with a grain of salt, (as I do not like to use plastic in general) a considered “safe plastic” gives me a whole lot more confidence than one that is up in the air, that may or not be safe.
While this was the main reason why I bought this product, the product itself does its job. It is strong plastic and cannot easily break. The only difference that I’ve noticed between this and the Breville scoop/tamper is that this scoop seems to be a tad bit wider but the tamper is the same. I measured both scoops up and this Krups one gives me a little bit more coffee in a scoop but since almost all of my scoops and shakes to get it exactly at the line have always been arbitrarily different each time, this is not really a factor for me at all.
Another noticeable difference between plastics is that this Krups one after a tamp seems to hold onto coffee in tiny bits (especially with pre-ground espresso) in which I dust it off a bit after use, which the Breville plastic never did. However, the little annoyance is tucked under the rug for a safer plastic. I’d choose health over performance any day. On the plus side, it does it far less when the grind is freshly ground which I do myself anyway.
All in all, if you are looking for a strong, effective, safer alternative, then this is surely your choice over any other scoop/tamper that you’ll find that uses a plastic.
