PD treatment praxis - essentials.
Well written by one of the worlds experts on PD, Mayo Clinic Dr. Eric Ahlscog. The book includes a glossary of the key medical terms. It should be required reading by all Parkinson’s patients.
A weakness is the minimal discussion about nausea, vomiting and constipation which are significant side-effects of Sinemet, the “gold standard” drug used in the management of PD. Passing mention is made of the use of the drug, domperidone used internationally to treat nausea etc, as being simply unavailable in the USA.
It should be said that: FDA recognizes that there are some patients with severe gastrointestinal motility disorders that are difficult to manage with available therapy. They may be able to receive treatment with domperidone through an expanded access investigational new drug application (IND). These conditions include gastroesophageal reflux disease with upper GI symptoms, gastroparesis, and chronic constipation.
