A beautiful rare gem of a set!
This is a classic! Retro Space has such a unique aesthetic about it that newer Lego themes just can't recreate, plus Ice Planet has killer style with the bright orange everywhere and cool helmets for the minifigures, not to mention there are tons of pieces that just don't exist in Lego's current repertoire, like the giant curved windows and the unique baseplate.
The main function of the set is pretty straightforward, but well executed: you can use the magnet crane to lift a rocket onto the frame, then turn a dial to hoist the rocket up into position on the launchpad, then back down to leave the rocket standing alone for lift-off. Again, it's straight forward, but well-built and works every time.
My only real issue is the instructions. Unlike modern instructions that focus on little sections at a time, older instructions do everything at once, forcing you to waste several minutes studying each page to make sure the steps didn't sneak a couple pieces into a back corner without you noticing.
All in all, it is a beautiful rare gem of a set, and I am proud to have it in my collection!

One of a kind treasure
This type of set is one of a kind; Lego has never made anything else like it in almost 20 years. The simple pneumatic system works 90 percent of the time, except for the odd time where the pods get caught in the couplings (just keep the pipes straight to avoid this) It works by itself but can also link up with the Red Planet Protector and Recon Mech RP sets (Hence the name "Hangar"). The included Martians are all unique and haven't appeared in any other theme since.
Showed this off to my students last week and all of them were speechless at how cool Lego was back in my day.
