Just don't make them like this anymore !!!
I have a few of these vsx-d***s series receivers. ( 603,703, and the 704 ) , The power and clarity is amazing.. The vsx-d603s and vsx-d703s with 130 watts per channel x 4 and the vsx-d704s with an incredible 165 watts per speaker x 4 minimum at 8 ohms with 130 per speaker minimum in 5.1 surround mode. Granted it doesn't have hdmi , But it does have pro-logic dolby, Jazz, dance, simulated surround, hall, pro-logic theater with normal ,wide and phantom settings in Dolby pro-logic and pro-logic theater modes to give you total control of your sound with effects setting levels from 10-80 to control the depth of your sound effects with seperate front and rear surround volume levels, I run this unit with my satellite feed passing through it before it goes to the tv and it cleans up the picture rather well for its age and compatibility with today technology is actually very good, I run a set of jbl l-100t speakers, a set of Cerwin Vega m80 speakers, a set of klipsch kg2's for the surround sound on the sides and a sony ss-c8 center channel speaker ( which I hope to upgrade with a klipsch center speaker very soon ) and the clarity of this receiver along with the punch it packs power wise is a definite match for todays 5.1 receivers hands down and even most of the 7.1 setups, ( Notice most of my speakers are old school ledgend's from back in the day and all very different and it still gives an amazingly clear and even sound distribution so no matter what speaker your running this receiver will show you what they are made of quickly ) . All this backed on the bottom end with a audiosorce 15" 200 watt powered sub and when I say shake stuff of the walls in the man cave is an under statement to say the least. And it's all crystal clear undistorted sound that will bring your movie or music concert to true life with this amazing audio video receiver.. Don't get me wrong, I like the newer receivers that pioneer makes now but, I will take this old school beast over them all any day of the week, Boy they just don't make them like this anymore that's for sure. That's why I have 2 more as backup spares incase this one ever needs serviced lol...

Worth the money
I purchased this avr to replace a slightly older sc-77 from pioneer. I wanted a avr that gave me more control over my subwoofers as i run 3 in my home theater. 2 in the front spread apart and 1 in the center in the back. With this receiver i run 2 of the same subs left and right on one of the sub outputs and another different sub on the other sub out. This avr allows me to tailor each sub output so i can blend each sub together. With independent outputs and separate volume controls and eq for each sub out , i was able to get just the blend i want and like. With high power and a big selection of speaker configurations to choose from i can run up to 9 channels at a time with very engulfing sound. I generally run a 9.3 speaker configuration and sometimes a 7.3.2 but am thinking about switching up to a 5.3.4 configuration for the ultimate atmos sound experience. I'm use to working a pioneer avr so i found it easy to operate after setting up but, I'm sure it can be overwhelming to a novice operator so downloading the full operators manual from the internet is highly recommended. With a little patience and trial and error you can achive a great sounding theater experience and rest assured there's even a reset feature to set the receiver back to factory specs if you get overwhelmed and feel the need to start over. I will note that through extensive research the sc-90's models are probably the best that pioneer offers even up till todays times with their 2.2 DCP and atmos and dts:x capabilities. But if your not to pressed to have a full fledged 4k tv experience then the pioneer sc-80's series receivers will do just what you are looking for. Equipped with mcacc pro , high quality dac's and excellent video pass-though quality , the pioneer avr is a true player in the home theater game. I would make this purchase again and definitely recommend to a friend or enthusiasts alike.

Amazing sound with tons of power
1 of 1 found this helpful I recently purchased this item to replace a Pioneer 1015tx A/V receiver I was using. I haven't regretted it for 1 second. All the multiple surround sound fields and settings combined with the phenomenal power this receiver has truly brings your movie experience to life. And with on screen display settings it's a breeze to operate.
