Great simple thermometer
Simple to use--no batteries necessary--with a nut below the dial you can turn with a wrench or pliers to calibrate. Just put the probe in ice water and wait till the needle stops moving and turn the nut till it reads 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Centigrade. Stick the probe a couple inches into the soil, and when it reads between 50 and 65 Fahrenheit, plant your Fescue seed (or whatever you're planting at its required temperature.)

Well designed and built
This is a sturdy boom with one of the best pivoting attachments to attach it to the top of a light stand. The thickness of each of the three sections is the same, giving it additional stiffness but also a bit more weight toward the far end. It's rated for 10 pounds of weight, but it's surprising how a 2-pound light at the end causes it to start flexing just a little, so the heavier the light or other load on the end, the less you may want to extend it. The hook for a counterweight at the opposite end from the load is convenient, and once you tighten it, the weight gives it additional rotational stability beyond what the pivot clamp provides to keep the weight of the load from turning the rod.
I use an Impact Rapid Baby to 3/8" Male Threaded Adapter, with the boom stud inserted through the side rather than the end of the adapter, with a small ball head attached to the adapter, to hang a light upside down in a horizontal position that is very stable.
