Man is cured of dreaded superbug with purified sewage.
This is a compelling story about a couple of college professors that went on a vacation to Egypt on November 2015. The husband gets sick with gall stones in Luxor and he needs to get to a hospital. He has a pancreas infection, his heart is racing, his blood pressure is dropping, he is in a lot of pain and the doctor can't prescribe anything until he can diagnose the illness. The doctor in Egypt does not have the technology he needs at his small clinic and the patient gets transferred to Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. Dr. Stefan Zeuzem diagnoses the problem as acute pancreatitis with the complication of a pseudocyst in the abdomen the size of a football. The cyst is infected with Acinetobacter baumannii which is resistant to all antibiotics. Tha patient gets transferred to U.C. San Diego where they treat him with phage therapy.
