Original Myst: the original still gets it done
1 of 1 found this helpful Oh yeah, missed it first time around, grad school in the mid-90's. The wife of a prof buddy solved the thing while I was visiting. Since, I've had some fun with realMyst 3D, but had never experienced the original. Oh man, was this thing ever groundbreaking!
INSTALLATION WHOAS: Windows version of Original Myst was targeted to Win 3.1 and Win 95. Expect problems installing even to Win XP SP3.
INSTALLATION SOLUTION: Microsoft has a Virual PC 2004 (best for XP SP3), Virtual PC 2007, both available for DL, and Windows 7 bundled Windows Virtual PC. I installed a bare-bones original W95 to Virtual PC 2004, and original Myst CD installed easily to the virtual W95 and runs without a hitch.
Myst is the one that brought text games roaring into a fledgling PC virtual environment. It still holds up.

Used gear. Cheap. Not worth cost of returning to return.
DOA, or simply not compatible. You take your chances, its cheap, and would cost too much to return, so you toss it, and keep looking.
Its quiet because it doesn't do anything.
ebay's little icon just informed me that my review is looking good. Sweet.

The Wonder of Surplus
I have such a great respect for folks who deal in surplus and retired gear. This Oki printer is not obsolete, it is still sold as new by Okidata, for just under $400.00. This perfectly functioning printer from a government equipment clearance was sold to me for forty bucks. A new ribbon assembly was ten dollars. And I have DOS programs I still use in pure DOS that are very happy with their new dot matrix printer.
