Hawthorn String Quartet : Silenced Voices: Victims of the Holocaus CD
Dec 10, 2021
Silenced but hardly forgotten: a profound sample
All five works on this disc were composed by artists whose lives were ended by the Nazi attack on civilization: Schulhoff and Klein in camps, Kapralova while attempting to escape Europe. None of these works was composed in a concentration camp. Erwin Schulhoff's SQ#1, Flute Sonata, and Concertina for Flute, Viola, and Bass, for example, were written between January 1924 and June 1925. Vítezslava Kapralova (four short piano pieces dedicated to Firkusny) and Gideon Klein (an incomplete Duo for Violin and Cello) were only 25, the former already having established herself as conductor and composer. All of the compositions are superbly performed and not at all lugubrious. Northeastern has assembled a masterful group of musicians (Fenwick Smith, Virginia Eskin, the Hawthorne SQ, Mark Ludwig, Edwin Barker, Sally Pinkas, Si-Jing Huang, Sato Knudsen) and provided engineering worthy of composers and performers. Among the several remarkable discs during the past three decades devoted to the silenced voices of the Nazi era, this one should be actively pursued.
WILLIAM RUSSELL PERFORMED BY ESSENTIAL MUSIC MADE IN AMERICA THE CD
Dec 18, 2020
Who is William Russell (1905-1992), 20thC American composer?
If one's spectrum of musical interest includes Ives, Ruggles, Cage, and other notables in the exploratory fields of challenging aural experience and creation, obtain this unique collection of "The Complete Works of William Russell," performed by the superb cast of Essential Music, including Judith Gordon -- better known for her superb contributions to the traditional corpus -- and impeccably issued by Kew Gardens' own Mode, which has indefatigably provided so many memorable recordings of Scelsi. This a rare CD.
Benjamin Zander : B.P.O 20th Anniversary Edition CD
Nov 02, 2019
Look for it.
This 20th Anniversary Edition of the recorded history of the Boston Phil, an assembly of mostly amateur musicians -- lawyers, doctors, etc -- who have demanding day jobs, is a treasure of familiar compositions distinctively performed. Benjamin Zander is the conductor, Carlton (England) is the label. The soloists are superb. Lucky are the people who find it.
