I think as long as this configuration exists, why bother with the trash can?

There are very few reasons to purchase the trash can, certainly for the majority of people looking for a more powerful desktop mac. This machine is crazy powerful and capable to pounding out calculations incredibly fast. It's a great deal. If I needed another tower I'd buy this again. I just swapped my drives into this tower, swapped cables and I was up and running with zero additional effort.
