Great way to teach history!
Children love to learn through story. This volume of Horse Diaries along with volumes 1-3 and 13, do an excellent job of that. Other volumes may also continue this trend but we have not read them yet. In an age where children and pre-teen fiction seems so filled with fantasy, despair or downright ridiculousness, these books bring real history to life through the eyes of the animals they love. The main human characters are also children that learn to make wise choices in the midst of difficulties, respecting all life including that of animals. I highly recommend this volume and the above mentioned to anyone that wants to encourage honorable character and an appreciation of history in the children which bless their lives.

Great Way to Introduce Literature
Elementary children like hands-on activities. These Dover Publications Literature Coloring Books combine quality reading with quality coloring pages creating the perfect environment for an elementary student to engage literature on their level. They can read and then color, allowing time to process and discuss what they just read. Better than an illustrated classic, these books allow the children to engage the illustrations not just look at them. As a homeschool mom always looking for affordable ways to better my children's education I give Dover Publications two thumbs up. If you like Black Beauty you should check out their other Literature Coloring Books, History Coloring Books and Science Coloring Books. You can build a curriculum for young elementary students almost based solely on these affordable publications. I was not paid to make this assessment. I just know how good they are and want other people to have the same goodness we do!

Great Introduction to Aerodynamics
I bought this book for my ten year old son upon his request. Shortly after receiving it we did a project constructing gliders out of cardboard, straws and clay. He had learned so much about aerodynamics from the book that he put ailerons and a special tail on his glider. Then he proceeded to adjust them to show me all the different movements in flight (i.e. climb, descend, yaw, roll). Not only did he show them to me but he was able to explain them. He has read books and learned about flight before but this book brings these principles to light not only with words but also with directly corresponding pictures in the midst of the story stimulating the child's brain in multiple ways and thereby increasing the retention of the material. My four year old is almost as interested in this book as my ten year old. This book is an investment worth making for your budding scientist. Just be prepared for them to walk away knowing more about flight than you (and I'm a licensed engineer)!
