Great EDC with great steel - this ain't Grandma's 420C!
4 of 4 found this helpful The Benchmade 560BK-1 Super Freek is pretty new on the knife scene. The CPM-M4 blade steel was a primary reason for my purchase.
I used a lot of blade steels including some very good steels like CPM-154, S30V and S35V, but I'm super impressed by the M4. This stuff takes and incredible edge and holds it! Very fine grained. However, this steel is not known for it's corrosion resistance (rust), but that doesn't make a bit of difference for me. What this steel is known for is toughness and outstanding edge retention, factors that are much more important for me. The blade is Cerakoted and that should help with you guys that work around wet all the time.
I used oil stones to smooth out the grind a bit and they worked just fine although I will say it does feel a bit different than other steels during whetting. To touch up an edge, I used a fine diamond stone and that's a bit faster. But, oil stones will work just fine.
I've always liked an Axis lock. This model does not have the additional positive, safety locking push bar like you'll find on a 580 Barrage, but the fit of the Axis lock is very good and I find I'm not missing the safety too much. This is a manual opening knife and very smooth.
The shape of the blade is sweet. The thumb ramp and jimping on the spine really lets you get a lot pressure onto this blade. I worried that the overall length folded would be too big, but it's ridding just fine in my pocket. There is absolutely no blade play and the action is very smooth as I would expect from any Benchmade.
Overall, I could not be happier.
