A cute, addictive game for Nintendo DS.
This is a very cute and surprisingly enjoyable game for the Nintendo DS. I bought it after playing Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland for the PS3 and I was not disappointed with Annie, despite the age of the game. Atelier Annie has you creating items, fighting monsters, and making friends in an addictive combination of RPG and micromanagement elements. The main goal of the game is to build and manage facilities on a developing island as you compete for the position of top alchemist. Annie can vary from relaxing to stressful depending on how much the player is hoping to achieve. There are multiple endings that can be earned depending on what you accomplished throughout your 3 years on Sera Island. It should be noted, however, that obtaining a perfect ending is significantly more complicated and may require the use of a walkthrough, as well as multiple game plays, (items and money can be transferred over in a New Game+ mode after completion). While Annie is incredibly enjoyable and addictive, it can also become fairly stressful. At times, the player may receive several timed requests at once, making it difficult to complete story-related tasks in a timely fashion. Also, the immense amount of character events can be overwhelming; the constant interruptions can prove stressful even for patient gamers. In addition, instructions given early on can be easily missed or misunderstood, causing some frustration with the alchemical process in particular. These minor annoyances can be easily overlooked, however, as the gameplay itself is fantastic. There is always something to do, and whether you are collecting items, developing facilities, or leveling your party, almost everything is relevant in some way and the player almost always feels accomplished. The character events are fantastic as well, (I often found myself laughing out loud during the cutscenes). It should be noted, though, that while all text is in English, the voice-overs were never translated for international release. If you are a fan of Japanese anime, though, this shouldn't be a problem. If it is bothersome, you can turn the voices off from the Options menu.
