Distinct possibility of a poor motor design in the Powersmith
2 of 2 found this helpful I bought the Powersmith PAVC101 vacuum new from a store on eBay in January 2016 to use on my Kozi pellet stove . Almost immediately after starting to use, I noticed that the motor was becoming extremely hot. Soon after, the motor began to shut down after only a few minutes of use. I called the company and was told there was an overheat switch in the motor but was offered no solutions for the overheating. Indeed, the vacuum would again work after a long cool down period and I used the vacuum several times more during the 2015-2016 heating season.
Move forward to this heating season (2016-2017) and the vacuum's motor barely ran with a grinding noise and with the strong stench of ozone filling the room each time I turned it on. The vacuum is now 9 months old and it has quit running completely.
I should note that I never allowed hot ashes to enter my vacuum and I always kept the filter cleaned.
The Powersmith ash vacuum appears to be well-built from an external examination. However, I see at least one other reviewer complaining about an overheating motor so there could very well be a design problem in the motor.

Bad engineering for correct fit inside VersaPak.
Some months ago I ordered two of these Masione VP100 batteries for a Black & Decker VersaPak electric screwdriver. The first thing I should say is neither battery ever held a good charge but the worse part is they destroyed my screwdriver when one finally became so soundly stuck inside the unit that it could not be removed. I unsuccessfully tried to pull the battery from the unit with regular pliers, vice-grips and finally by opening up the driver so I could try to get a small screwdriver underneath the battery's base which remained stuck inside the screwdriver. And yes, the battery release on the side of the screwdriver was released while attempts to remover the battery were being made. Apparently, the female plug on the batteries is constructed too small to correctly fit over the male counterpart of the screwdriver unit. This is some of the worse battery engineering I have ever encountered working with rechargeable power tools. My screwdriver and the remains of the stuck battery inside were tossed into the trash.
