Unflinching and Brutal
Difficult book to review. The Great War in period photographs where an unflinching and often savage scene is laid bare for the reader.
I can understand why it was banned but to my mind it should be essential reading for all those interested in that most tragic of times.

A Moving and Influential Poem
Ralph Vaughan Williams, George Butterworth, Ivor Gurney and other composers were all influenced by the poetry of Alfred Edward Housman. In this fine edition his cycle of poems "A Shropshire Lad" are accompanied by evocative photographs of the actual locations mentioned in the poetry.
Ludlow, that pearl of English towns, features heavily as does Breedon and the beautiful hills and woods so perfectly conjured by Housman's words.
There is little wonder that the poetry resonated so strongly with the soldiers of the Great War and this edition does add to ones enjoyment of the work.
