Entertaining
I was very surprised at how addictive this show is to watch. Elena Gilbert (the main female character) annoys me with her nasally whining, but otherwise an enjoyable show to watch. Admittedly, I reviewed the series on Wikipedia prior to buying the 1st 3 of 8 seasons and I know which way the wind is blowing between the characters, which actually makes it better in my opinion. I enjoy watching the transformations of the main characters attitudes.
I also love that the episodes are long and that there are so many (about 22) per Season. Many shows, minus the commercials, are too short.
I almost didn't buy the series after reading about it on Wiki because, once you start getting into the later seasons, the show seems to get so convoluted. People die, but not really. Vampires are killed...Ha, psyche! Not really. Humans become vampires and the get a "cure" and become humans again. There's a ring that protects the wearer from being killed, a pocket watch that points to vampires (and that's just in the 1st season).
Yes, I was indoctrinated on the Twilight Series and so The Vampire Diaries show vampires as completely opposite than what I was used to.
I'm still only on Season 1 and "Katherine" hasn't even made an appearance, aside from reminiscences but, so far, 2 thumbs up.

Highly Addictive Soap Opera!
1 of 1 found this helpful I had never watched this while it was on TV. Even a few months ago, before I bought Season 1 to see if I would like it, I read Wikipedia about it and the lives of the characters sounded so convoluted that I was sure it would be a stupid show. And yet, curiosity won out & I have been addicted since the very first episode. The Vampire Diaries is a soap opera. The characters are very "eye candy" although I don't like Elena's whiny attitude. The story lines flow easily between each other. What I love about it is that everyone (at least on the show if not real life) are like a family and stick together, while the protagonists (Season 3 is the Mikaelson family of Original Vampires) frequently betray each other and stab each other in the back, literally.
Another stupid thing is that no one is ever stabbed in the heart, even though the show indicates that is where they are stabbed, its really the solar plexus. It makes me wonder about the intelligence of the producers, etc...
I have finished Season 3 and anxiously awaiting Season 4 to arrive next week. Elena has just died after recently being injected with vampire venom and so,,,
