The Rolling Stones : Goats Head Soup (Box Set) VINYL Deluxe 12" Album Box Set
    Jul 24, 2022
Recycled and remastered Stones (and not all for the best)
The original Goats Head Soup was one of those albums that music magazines raved over but Stones fans were more cautious. I always disliked "Angie" (the single released) and some tracks seemed too extended for their good. This 50th anniversary set of two double LP sets on vinyl has been remastered so some of the initial muddiness on the original LP release, especially around Mick Taylor's lead guitar work, has definitely benefitted. The second LP of bonus tracks is pretty redundant - the Jimmy Page tracks and the other tracks where half the Stones are missing would never make it to any official LP as heard here and the rehearsal or demo of tracks that did plus remixed tracks by Glyn Johns is not that great. This brings us to the double live album. Recorded in Brussels in October 1973 post the album tour, it is nice to see Taylor being more integrated into the group's playing. Sadly the set starts well but by the final side is falling apart (compare the playing on "Jumpin' Jack Flash" with the earlier and much better version on "Get Your Ya Yas Out"). Plus by the end of four sides, I was getting annoyed with Jaggers's mock French intros. Best summed up as a nice recording of the Stones in their best-ever live grouping (in addition to Taylor, Billy Preston and horn section (though not Keys and Horn as per the original album). You can easily hear why it was left in the can till now! Final reason for 4 not 5 starts is no booklet or essay (unlike the CD set) for an expensive box set!
POCO – CRAZY EYES 180G Audiophile Vinyl LP (NEW/SEALED) MOVLP1234
    Feb 14, 2019
    Poco's finest album?
Well firstly to comment on the re-release Music On Vinyl LP before the music. Compared with the original UK Epic record release in the 1970s the cover is top quality laminate over poor cardboard and the 180 Gram LP also sounds just great. There is no stated remastering done so maybe they just sourced better original tapes (or I have played my first copy to death?) The music still remains magic - I appreciate many hanker after the more original Poco country sound but this LP following on the heels of "A Good Feelin' to Know" showed the best aggregation of Poco members at the top of their game and mixing a heady blend of rock and country. Standouts are Paul Cotton's interpretation of J J Cale's "Magnolia" and the title track about the by then deceased Gram Parsons (the only track arranged by Bob Ezrin and revealing shades of his prior work with Lou Reed) . GP's own "Brass Buttons" appears in a version that I feel beats GP's own. To be honest, there is not a duff track on this album. Sadly this was to be founder Ritchie Furay's swan song album but what a high to go out on. One also realises why the Eagles allegedly kept such a close eye on what Poco did in making their own recordings.
Othello DVD (2014) Orson Welles cert U Highly Rated eBay Seller Great Prices
    Aug 10, 2022
Film that struggles given studio and production values
Orson Welles was probably not very proud of this attempt at Shakespeare's tragedy as his later comments confirmed. Shot quickly in three weeks on a tight budget using cheap studio cowboy sets and costumes that look like they had been used in Genghis Khan and Viking movies, its saving grace is the acting plus Welles's visual flair in filming. This DVD reinstates the Scottish accents Welles originally shot with plus reinstates the major cuts the studio Republic had demanded before the film's original public release. Welles may have made cuts in the play's lines and cut scenes as filmed but overall this was a brave attempt given Hollywood's prior efforts at filing Shakespeare had always failed.
