Communicative and very nice to do business with! The seller took pains to wrap my poster in plastic in order to protect it from the elements, and then placed it where I could easily retrieve it on my own. It was a local pickup so the extra effort in packaging was very much appreciated.

A fascinating look into the mikveh...a world I never knew existed. Wonderfully researched and written, thought-provoking and for me, mind expanding.

Bravo! This book will make you feel like you've spent time in Puglia, IT!
If you love southern Italy, or just want to stretch your understanding of people in another part of the world, you will be well-rewarded by reading this book. It is a special and unusual treasure that will take you far beyond the hackneyed romanticized accounts of Italian life that are frequently presented in other books about Italy, and past the judgmental, pitying books that have been written about problems, poverty and dispair in l'Italia meridionale. After reading this book, I feel almost as if I spent a great deal of time with Mr. and Mrs. McEwan in Puglia!!! I bought Pan' e Pomodor because of my fascination with and love of Puglia and to add fuel two of my dreams --spending time on the Gargano Peninsula (the spur of Italy's east coast) and living part of the year in Southern Italy. This book celebrates the people, life and language of Vico del Gargano, a town in the province of Foggia in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. As he lays out the details of how he and his wife M's journey towards having a home in M's families town of origin in Southern Italy, Ian McEwan has a bit of a dry writing style, and parts of the book seem like a "This (Very, Very) Old House" with many details of renovating their Italian home that a contractor or home improvement person could probably really dig into. I found these details a bit overwhelming, -- but since I'm a total plant nerd, the same level of detail about how locals renovate, care for and harvest olives from their orchards was utterly fascinating -- and after reading them I feel like I was there during the process and could go tackle helping with the harvest straightaway! While Mr. McEwan's dry style and detail can make can for a little slow-going that very same precise attention to detail made me feel like I finished the book having a close and intimate knowledge of the people of Vico, their daily routines, the easy rythym of life, and the way all manner of things are done in Vico. His descriptions of all things are so rich as to make me feel I have seen them with my own eyes! And that richness, and slowness, and attention to detail throughout life's pleasures, doldrums and pains is so characteristic of the joy of life I have known in my limited time visiting family in southern Italy! And you will feel that you really get a chance to "know" many of the people who are a part of the McEwan's life in Vico. Another wonderful feature of the book for me is the inclusion of snippets of local dialect throughout the text, and inclusion of many Italian phrases. These bring the living voices of Vico into the text, and if, like me, you too are fascinated by the Italian language and local dialects, you will love this chance to "hear" as well as read about local life. This book sits well with me -- little bits of it come back to me day-to-day. I know I will re-read it and ferret out more than I could retain from the first reading. I'll share it with my nearly 90 year-old father whose parents came from further south in Puglia and I am sure it will bring a sparkle to his eyes. Beyond cultural knowledge, there is a lot of wisdom to be learned in this book about the things that make a good life, how we are human and what and how much we really need to feel alive. Despite some slow-going within its pages, once I started reading this book I would read it until I couldn't stay awake any longer and never missed picking it up to continue at the first possible opportunity. Bravo!
