Not as good as it could and should have been, thanks to the studio suits and bean counters
The movie was better than I remembered. Nice transfer to blu-ray, although the lack of any extra content was disappointing, but not surprising to anyone who reads the Wikipedia article about the film's troubled history, somewhat like what occurred in the original release of the classic "Once Upon a Time in America." It sounds like the suits and bean-counters didn't understand what they had on their hands. Perhaps things might have gone differently if this adaptation had been performed after "No Country for Old Men," rather than before.
Hat's off to director Billy Bob Thornton's decision to stand behind Daniel Lanois, who originally composed the score but I would love to see Billy Bob's original longer version of the film. Matt Damon's comments on the whole situation are interesting and enlightening. Maybe as was eventually done in the case of Once Upon a Time in America, someone will put some money together and get it released as the director had intended that it to be seen.
