Great resource for reading instruction
This is a great book for practicing both fiction and nonfiction reading comprehension skills. My students are attracted to the colorful illustrations on each page. Each story is accompanied by overall comprehension or specific skill questions (such as cause effect, story elements, sequence of events, main idea/details) in a variety of formats, including multiple choice, short answer, and sequencing.

Great series for middle grade boys!
I bought this book for a 5th grade boy who was previously a reluctant reader, until he fell for the Hank Zipzer series. He finds these books engaging and funny, but has learned a lot of new vocabulary and been able to delve into other literary elements (figures of speech, characterization, plot, writers' craft) through reading books in this series.
The main character, a 5th/6th grade boy with learning challenges living in New York. who has great adventures with his two best friends, would probably appeal to boys of similar ages, particularly if they face some learning challenges of their own. These books definitely affirm that it's OK to be different and reinforce themes of friendship and family.
