Good Build Quality - Subpar Tape Cutting Experience
I like the quality of the tape dispenser. The handle is comfortable and I like how sharp the tape cutter is.
The only issue I have had is that it is hard to cut the tape (which is the one and only job this product is used for). I have to put a good amount of force into the motion needed to cut the tape and often it will slip and let out 2-3 inches of tape beyond what I want. This is also accompanied with a sharp jerking motion that would get annoying if I had to package a lot of items in one sitting.
When I compare the tape cutting abilty of this dispenser to the 20 year old tape dispenser my grandpa gave me, this one is pretty pitiful. When I put the 3M tape this that came with this Scotch dispenser into the old tape dispenser it cut presicely where I wanted it to with virtually no effort on my part. I was especially amazed since the blade has never been sharpened or replaced to my knowlege.
The first and second picture I included shows the Scotch branded tape dispenser while I was pressing down with about 30% of my full strength (This is a whole lot more force then I think is reasonable for a sharp serrated blade to need in order to cut tape. In those photo I am puting about 30-40 pounds of force into a downward motion as you can see the tape is not cutting. In the third photo I show the vintage dispenser from my grandpa that I was aiming to replace. I only need to put in about half or a third of the energy into pressing down before it cuts.
When I first got this tape dispenser I was imppressed by the build quality of this item and wanted to like it. However, I canot ignore that the dispenser does not work as well as I expected it too based on another scotch tape branded dispenser I had used at my job. Maybe it is a different model, or maybe this particualr item is not optimal.
