Superb image quality for patient enthusiasts.
I purchased the Sigma SD14 to complete my collection of Sigma Digital SLR’s.
To my eyes, there are no better cameras on this planet, in terms of image quality produced in good light. They all contain the exclusive Foveon chip, a new way of capturing color and light (digital, a bit like film), invented by an American, Dick Merrill. Sigma started Foveon cameras with the SD9 in 2002, and then followed the SD10, SD14, SD15, and currently the SD1M. In terms of image quality, they are each different and wonderful, and “draw” differently, to use the jargon. I think the SD14 is distinguished by the way it captures highlights in the most realistic way – glistening hubcaps, storm clouds, etc. Some people can see the ”Foveon look”, others can’t, but I think the SD14 has it in spades. At their best, images have a “walk in “ 3D quality with excellent dynamic range.
But it is an out and out enthusiast’s camera for someone pushing the boundaries of image quality. To see its potential, the light has to be just right. It is limited to 100-200 ISO and print sizes of A4+ to A3 without losing quality. Modern “SD mount” Sigma lenses are required or an aftermarket adapter to accept third party manual focus lenses . RAW captures, proprietary X3F files are a must, but the Sigma proprietary software is free and does a good job of converting these files to Jpegs or Tiffs. Autofocus is slow, and sometimes the chip or conditions can produce a yellow cast (which can be easily corrected in Photoshop if it ever occurs). The camera is a bit old fashioned with dials rather than menus, which I personally like. Battery life is not great, but OK. Spare batteries are easy to find.
I have found all my used Sigma cameras to be very durable. Put a quality modern Sigma lens on them, clean the sensor if needed with an appropriate apparatus (I use Dust-Aid Platinum), learn how to adjust the mirrorbox to correct for back or front focus, and you have a very special camera which should give years of service.
Of course I would buy it again. Mine purchased from eBay had been well maintained and kept in excellent condition, clearly owned by another enthusiast.
