Generic junction box with good features
2 of 2 found this helpful Quite simply, this is a decent product - if a 4-foot connecting cable is long enough for you. Mounted mine on the trailer close to the tongue, but even with the shortest draw bar I've ever owned, the cable will barely reach the trailer port on the truck. I wound up having to purchase a separate 6-foot molded cable in order to use this trailer with another truck.
The box is decent quality. I only say decent because the two mounting studs inside used to secure the lid when closed have cracks down the side already. A better option would have been brass machine screw inserts and brass machine screws to secure the lid. Of course, the price would have been higher.
Since the box isn't entirely waterproof (common moisture intrusion due to heat/cool cycles, especially in humid locales), I recommend either grease or petroleum jelly daubed on the terminals inside to prevent corrosion. The terminals are standard, inexpensive ring-types which will eventually corrode. Liberally daub your corrosion-prevention additive on every terminal, ensuring all exposed metal parts are covered.
Last point - this product did not come with a wiring diagram. Industry standard color-codes are different for the 7-way plugs versus the standard color-code for the actual trailer wiring (and according to a Google search, there are three different color schemes for the 7-way plug. This one uses the "7-Way RV Standard"). Here's my application:
Function Trailer 7-Way Cord
----------------------------------------------------------------
Left-Turn/Brake Yellow Red
Right-Turn/Brake Green Brown
Running/Parking Brown Green
Ground White White
Now you may be wondering why I chose the 7-way over the 4-way if I only showed these four? At a later date I'll be adding a battery to my trailer to power work LED lights when the trailer isn't coupled to the truck (hence, battery charging through the +12V wire in the 7-way cord), and I want to add backup (reverse) lights to the trailer as well. No need in my application for trailer brakes.
Overall, this kit is a good purchase value - if a 4-foot cord will meet your application. Initially, it worked for me, but my son and I share this trailer, and his draw bar of choice, plus connector location, would not allow the cable to properly reach. The 6-foot molded plug/cable I had to purchase locally cost $39.99+tax alone.
I hope this review has been helpful to someone who needs it. G'day mates!
