Historical novel about the 1913 copper mine strike in Calumet, Michigan, and the Italian Hall disaster that began its end.
As a graduate of Michigan Technological University, I was aware of the 1913 mining strike in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Ms. Russell has written a compelling historical novel about it, culminating in the Italian Hall disaster. With a mix of historical and non-historical characters, she rarely strays from the actual facts of that strike. Well-written and researched, with humor, pathos, and a smidge of imagination, she brings the story to vivid life. There is a definite pro-union approach, and a kindness toward socialism yet that was the reality of the unions at the time so, again, very appropriate to the story. Turn-of-the-century Copper Harbor comes to life in Ms. Russell's hands, as well as the national effort to unionize not only this area, but all mining operations across the country. The struggle often went bloody and she does not hesitate to address it.
