Moen 96988 Cartridge repair kit, Posi-Temp 1 handle tub shower

Good temporary fix for Moen's design problem
Moen shower handle was so hard to to turn, it broke the plastic handle adapter. I rebuilt the valve cartridge with this kit, and now you can turn the handle with one finger. Moen has a serious design problem here. This house is only 3-1/2 years old, and 2 of the 4 showers developed this problem so far. The idea that you have to rebuild your shower valve every 3 or 4 years is ridiculous. It's not clear to me what causes the high amount of friction between the valve spool and its housing, but installing this kit fixes it. Be careful when reassembling, or you will pinch and cut the new-o-rings. As you install the spool into the sleeve, you will have to use a tool to push the o-ring into place to prevent damage. I went ahead and bought 4 extra kits, because I know I'll need them. I also highly recommend the valve cartridge puller tool, Danco model 86712. That worked well also.
