RE: Creators (A Review)
I don't normally get super into anime--while there's a lot of amazing anime out there it's hard for me to get through a lot of the anime tropes common to the genre. For context, some of my favorite anime are Madoka Magica, Death Note, One Punch Man, and Your Name (I know, pretty basic). That said, RE: Creators might be my favorite anime.
Maybe not the best written, the best animated, or the best acted--but it's still GREAT in all those departments. You want to see what would happen when a magical girl and a Mecha are in an anime with amazing fight choreography? This. This is it. I am more than a little biased as I'm a creatively minded person myself and this anime is certainly aimed at that audience, but for anyone who does consider themselves a Creator, I highly recommend this.
To be a little more grounded though my biggest problem with the product is that there are some types in the subtitles (not uncommon with anime, but still annoying) and I feel like some of the translation could have been slightly less literal (all the lines make sense but sometimes you have to think back and re-contextualize a previous line that was said for the one being spoken now to make sense.) In terms of the show itself the middle of the first half drags for an episode or two as we get into the politics of the characters existing in our world. Then in the second half there's about half of an episode devoted to those anime-isms that bother me (all the characters visiting a bathhouse as a chance to relax--interesting stuff occurs, but it doesn't do a lot for the world or very much for most of the characters considering the time spent on it.)
All of that said, this is a wonderful show with a little bit of something for everyone. The humor is natural, the tragedy is honest, and the plot is shaky but it even uses that to it's advantage in a meta sense. Even if you don't like it, it's worth watching to see what happens when a creator with high ambition and a unique vision heads a project.
If you don't mind the lack of a dub it's definitely worth a $15 purchase.
