Gerat USB Hub
As soon as you take this USB hub out of its box, you realise you are holding a quality piece of kit. It has a nice feel to it. Plug it in, and it just works. If you plug a phone into one of the three heavy-duty ports, you get a good charge rate.
I've done data transfer tests from a very fast PC to USB hard drives via this, and get excellent transfer rates. Speed is limited by the hard drives in question, not the USB hub.
The only trouble I've had is with below-par USB 3.0 cables. Swapping them out for shorter, quality cables solved that.
The supplied USB 3.0 cable was one metre long, which was too short for my needs. I bought a good-quality two-metre one, and had no problems with that.
All in all, this is a great hub, and I'm very pleased with it. I only paid £20 for a "refurbished" one, but it looks like new, so for me, it was great value too.

Best battery charger I have owned to date
1 of 1 found this helpful Having owned a whole variety of battery chargers over the years, some quite expensive, this is the best one to date.
I have two of the earlier model, the BL700, and two of this model, the BL700N. I've just been forced to buy my second BL700N, because one of my BL700's failed. The fact that it failed is a black mark. I don't know whether that was due to component failure, or a mains power surge though, so I'll let that one pass.
I make use of these a lot. The only problem I encounter is that sometimes a battery cell "sticks" on recharge. I always use the Discharge/Recharge function to drain any remaining energy from the cells before fully recharging them. This keeps them in good working condition. Sometimes though, a cell sticks during recharging, and won't rise above 1.18V. Discharging the cell after this shows it had almost zero stored charge. After that, it typically needs the "Refesh" cycle to bring it back into working order. This can take days, but does successfully restore the cell. This is why you might need more than one of these chargers!
I don't know whether this problem is due to the charger, or is just a characteristic of NiMH cells. Who knows? Anyway, it still does the job, and looking out for "stuck cells" on recharge is just something you have to get used to. It isn't always the same cells that stick; it appears to be random.
Other than that characteristic, it gets top marks for everything. It presents all the data you need about your batteries, without being over-complicated.

Good Quality Product, from a Thoughtful Manufacturer
It can be a tricky business, replacing one of these.
I replaced one for my 39-year-old house, and a lot can happen in 39 years. What was standard then, isn't standard now, so if you buy something that looks right, the chances are it will still be out by a few millimetres, and won't fit. You need to buy one that's exactly right, or one with a telescopic fitting. Even then, you need to measure up carefully and make sure you get the right one.
The advantage of McAlpine is you can go to their website and download the design drawings for these (as PDF files) and check the measurements beforehand. That way, you will know you've bought the right thing before it even arrives.
Comparing this to the one I bought that didn't fit, the McAlpine is noticeably better. My other one came with a dire warning not to over-tighten the sink nut, greatly emphasized. And why? Because it's a cheap, flimsy design. This McAlpine is much sturdier in construction, so comes with no such warnings. It's well made.
The hard bit was finding the right part; fitting it was a breeze. No bending, no forcing, no leaks. Job done!
