The Complete Novel is the Complete film
This version expands on the theatrical cut by leaps and bounds. You get much more character development in the "complete novel" version than you did in the previous one. Also, there is a lot more rock and roll songs during the film which Coppola put back in and replaced his dad's score. There is a vibe to the songs and they are placed in the right spots that add to the film. Francis Ford Coppola
I echo what was written on blu-ray.com.
"It is understandable that viewers who became fans of The Outsiders in its original version are disappointed that this Blu-ray contains only "The Complete Novel" but not the theatrical release. Since Warner is the king of double-dips, here's hoping they release a deluxe edition in the future that includes a second disc with the theatrical cut so that everyone can have their preferred viewing experience. For new viewers, however, I heartily recommend "The Complete Novel". I was impressed by The Outsiders in the shorter cut, but I wasn't truly moved by it until I saw "The Complete Novel". Warner's Blu-ray is an impressive presentation and is highly recommended."

One of the GREATEST Civil War films EVER MADE gets even GREATER!!
This film, in the pantheon of Civil War films, is one of the MASTERPIECES of American Cinema.
It stands right alongside "Gettysburg" which was Ronald F. Maxwell's FIRST Civil War film in a planned TRILOGY of Civil War films ("Copperhead" being the third film, which as of right now was Ron Maxwell's LAST film.
"Gods and Generals" THE EXTENDED CUT is FANTASTIC from the first frame to the last frame. The only problem that I had with it was the original THEATRICAL CUT was that there were way too many things that were cut out of it. The people behind the production of course KNEW this and the news had gotten out that there was a lot cut out so that it would be of suitable running length for a movie theater.
Not many people wanted to go to a theater and see a 4 hour EPIC. When "Gettysburg" was released into theaters, BEFORE "God's and Generals" was made, I was 19 years old. I worked at a United Artists theater at that time. When "Gettysburg" was showing it had TWO to THREE showtimes for the ENTIRE day. It was 4 hours with a 15 minute intermission at around the 2 hour mark. Back then there were no RECLINERS in the theater. We had ROCK HARD seats and you were eating your knees for 4 hours so seeing "Gettysburg" was a lot to ask a theater patron. Thankfully, there was an intermission, which harkened back to the days of "Gone With the Wind". When "Gone With the Wind" was in theaters it had an intermission, as many films of that era did.
So, THIS Director's EXTENDED cut was rumored about for a long time after the theatrical cut was released in theaters and onto home entertainment platforms. Then we waited for it to be released. Waited and waited and waited.
Well, I don't need to go into all of THAT because THIS guy did it for me. Take the time to read this review and you will BUY this before you finish reading the review.
Do a GOOGLE search for "The Extended Director’s Cut of “Gods and Generals”

This set gets HIGH marks for being a Digibook, having TONS of special features, portraying the characters as the Godly men that they were (Stephen Lang's character reads the Bible with is wife inside their house in one scene), and the QUALITY of the presentation.
I bought THIS one because of all of the things that were left out of the theatrical cut. This is my PREFERRED version of this film.
Five Words and One Letter: Robert Duvall as Robert E. Lee
THAT alone is enough for you to buy this. So BUY IT already, and see what you have been missing.
