Legendary metal frame TDK cassette
TDK MA-XG was the evolutionary pinnacle of type IV metal cassettes reached in 1986. A beautiful solid metal frame with wide logo free clear sides allows the user to gaze in admiration at the turning reels. Engineering excellence from when cassette was king and TDK was at their best. On proper top notch decks that have been recapped and calibrated this tape is capable, assuming the source audio is superb, of simply recording what the user hears. 24 bit 192Khz audio is simply captured and reproduced. Has to be experienced to be appreciated and heard. Like all great cassettes the XG imparts that resonant analogue fidelity that is inexplicably fantastic. Try at least one - but make sure your cassette deck is up to the task!

Nikon TC-E2 used to make binocular
These are very high quality Nikon lens systems of the Galilean optical design. In mid 2016 there appeared a lengthy discussion of these Nikon lens system on the premier Astronomy equipment forum, Cloudynights, in which it was found to be an excellent component in the making of a 2x54 binocular system. Essentially a modern Opera Glass or Field Glass, but of unbelievably superior quality. The 54mm aperture is necessary in order to obtain the remarkable true field of view (TFOV) of 28 degrees. The entire constellation of the Big Dipper fits comfortably within the field of these glasses.
At a Dark sky site this system is truly wondrous. Due to the way in which Galilean optics work, the actual specifications of the Nikon TC-E2 vary with the individuals maximum dilated pupil size. If a full 7mm in dark adapted night is obtained, then the resulting instrument acts as a 2x14 binocular, 7mm times the 2X magnification.
A Google search will pull up the Cloudynights discussion thread. There, users created 3D printable "shells" to hold a pair of these Nikon TC-E2 telephoto optics. I simply signed up at Shapeways and uploaded the publicly available open source "shell" halves and had them made in laser sintered aluminum & plastic composite for $20 each. They shipped to my door, from New York to West Coast Canada for $8. Assemble, glue in the Nikon TC-E2 and you have by far the best low power extreme wide field optic available.

These are the TDK SA cassettes from 1990...
These are the TDK SA cassettes from 1990-1992 period which are often regarded as the most consistent high quality period of manufacture. Stable consistent bias numbers apparently. Best to use a deck with individual bias calibration for recording, like the Nakamichi ZX-5, ZX-7, ZX-9 etc., for unbelievable results.
