the duke was an underrated general, possibly the best of his time. you might say it was napoleon but you'd be wrong because of waterloo. the duke fought more battles than most other famous 18th-19th century commanders, was never once defeated, ever, and his dispatches are like very early hemingway, - like way early like kansas city star early they're so sparse and declarative and heroic - lovely.
