the original
Restoration hardware sells this desk, and has for about ten years. It may not be your taste, but I love it. You may be able to find a chinese copy for about half the price of the original, but I am not sure the manufacturing quality would be the same. Unlike most furniture, which gets a dent or ding and is forever marred, this desk will be beautiful for decades, dents and all.

happiness is an easy to configure network

there are now six generations of the airport extreme and at least three of the airport express, plus you also have the time capsule nonsense. I didn't give it five stars on value, because there are cheaper items out there with similar features. They will kill you getting them configured correctly, but some folks like that sort of thing.
Let's start with time capsule. This is a nice feature that lets you back up your mac continuously, and then if something goes wrong, you go back in time and restore to where your mac was working beautifully. In theory, if your mac ever did get a virus, just back up until there was no virus and try again.
The time capsule basically is the same as the airport extreme, plus a hard drive. Note that the hard drive is not redundant, so if the hard drive on your mac fails, you may be able to recover from time machine, but if the time machine hard drive fails, it's gone. Start a new time machine and there is no going back.
As I understand it, you can hook up an external drive on your airport extreme and "Boom", it's a time capsule. this may be slower than the internal drive time machine, but honestly, I do not know. I opted for no time machine, I keep my files backed up on a mirror drive.
Next airport express.
Airport express is really intended to be an extender for airport extreme--if you need a hard wire somewhere that you cant send a wire to, express solves that. Plus it will extend your network by repeating, plus you can plug in speakers and play them remotely. I think you can use airport express as a tiny local hub for small networks. don't hesitate to use it that way, because you can always use it for something else next week, it's so flexible.
Airport extreme.
the sixth generation supports ac, wheras the fifth only supported n. Also, the sixth generation has more and bigger antennae. Not sure how much difference it makes in the real world, but my network seems a bit more stable, and triple speed is claimed. My old extreme is now a repeater at the far end of the network, my two generation old extreme is at my dad's house because his network never worked right until the day he plugged it in.
Configuration.
this is where the apple devices really shine. There are firewalls and configurations for all kinds of advanced network layouts supported. But mostly you don't care, you just want the stupid thing to work, or to tell you if it isn't working right. you run the free airport software, and it sets up your passwords, then it suggests configurations for you and tells you if something isn't working. I use a non-standard set up, with advanced security features. I almost never have to reconfigure anything, and when I do, it only takes me a minute, instead of the days and days my PC friends are accustomed to. There's a green light on the front of the machine. it flashes yellow if there is anything that requires attention. but mostly it's just green. And it works. Fast.

the right way
complain about the relative small storage provided by an SSD. Yeah, you're right about that. But. also, you are wrong. the primary drive in your workstation must contain the boot record, the operating system, essential apps--especially the big ones. You should NOT store your movie files, music files, pictures, in short YOUR stuff on the primary drive. Really you should be using an external drive for that. preferably something mirrored so you never lose data. That considered, the quarter gig of storage space of this SSD is more than adequate. Capacious even. and small size is the only downfall of this SSD. it is so blazing fast. apps launch so fast that your eyes don't even see them appear. like boom! cold starts are faster--but still slow, wake from sleeping is super-fast. Power consumption, noise and heat? minimal heat, no noise, and my notebook battery lasts an extra two hours. I used to say the best upgrade for you computer was more memory. Not so now. Switching to SSD adds an extra year or two to the life of your computer. Oh, and Samsung is a legit market leader.
