Tricky setting up the derailleur cable on 9-speed
3 of 3 found this helpful The designed routing for the derailleur cable appears to be below the clamp screw, because that is where the plate extends out and there is a groove. However, that produced the wrong travel with respect to my Shimano 9 speed STI shifters and Shimano 11-34 9 speed road cassette - too much travel. By routing above the screw, the angle is changed such that the travel changes to the correct amount, but the cable is not grasped with as much safety margin as it is kind of ad hoc - I turned the attached plate upside down, rotated 180 degrees, and somehow got it to work. This was unexpected because I had no such trouble with a previous Shimano Deore XT derailleur (which was more expensive).
