Oregon 200 great for remote places
3 of 3 found this helpful I bought the Oregon 200 for a road trip through Peru. There are no official TomTom or Garmin GPS road maps for Peru, or many other less frequently travelled countries. But there are a lot of websites with free maps that work on Garmin's including the Orgeon. Once I had the right map set up it worked about as good as my TomTom does in the US, but without spoken directions (not a big deal for me), and screen is not quite as bright. Worked well on hikes too, but again, a lot depends on what map you use. Garmin provides great support for the Oregons and is releasing updated software almost monthly, further improving GPS performance and features.
Overall a very nice hiking/biking/car GPS. However if you want to use it just in the US or Europe and just in the car, you will have to buy one of the (expensive) Garmin maps for it. In that case a car specific model will be better and cheaper.
