A Journey in More Ways Than One
1 of 1 found this helpful I purchased this item to give as a gift to a 19-year-old woman who just happens to be a 60s aficionado. She is fascinated by anything that offers a glimpse at the American lifestyle during those years, and this DVD set has really made her happy.
Even though Route 66 purports to be an adventure series--and it is one at face value--the show's journey also serves to present psychological studies of a variety of offbeat and intriguing characters whom Buzz and Todd encounter along the way in their travels. Since the series was shot on location, it's very interesting to see a wide variety of American regions as they appeared in the early 1960s.
The original commercials are included, and that has proven to be another area of interest to the young woman who received this item as a gift. To an older person like myself, it is fun to see these to see how things have changed since that time. To a young person who never lived at that time, it can be both historical and hysterical.
The picture and sound quality of the DVDs is excellent, especially considering the period of time from which this material has been compiled. I don't know how they did it.
It's amazing to see what a dramatic and interesting series this was. Many who went on to become huge stars--such as Robert Redford, James Caan, Martin Sheen, and Robert Duvall--appeared at some point in Route 66. Personally, I think watching something like this is a refreshing change from The Biggest Loser, The Simple Life, and all the other tripe that populates today's airwaves. Just looking at the Corvette and listening to the Nelson Riddle theme song alone would be worth the price of admission.
