    Reliable workhorse
I bought this camera for a friend - I have one and it's been all around the world with me, and has always produced excellent photos. The raw resolution is higher than I've ever needed. It has more features than I'll ever use, although remembering what they are is sometimes tricky! The only drawbacks I have found are: Shutter lag - it's far too long to catch some fast-moving events, and this is the one thing that I really wish was better. There have been times when I've missed a sudden event because of this, and it's really annoying. It uses a proprietary lithium rechargeable battery, so you need to make sure you always have a charged one with you because you never know when it's going to run out - you get about 5 photos warning on the screen. Unfortunately keeping Lithium batteries charged is the worst thing for their longevity. If it took a couple of AAs instead, you could always put in some Alkalines to get you out of a problem, but you can't, so it's inconvenient and you need to keep battery management in mind. There are a couple of features that I use once in a Blue Moon, but having them there when you want them is great: stitched panoramic shots, and interval shooting. The former means that you take a series of photos of, say, the view from the top of a mountain, panning the camera in between - it shows you the previous shot alongside the live view so you can match up their edges, and back home the PC software completes the job and you end up with a wide panorama where it's almost impossible to see the joins. Interval shooting is where you set up the camera on a tripod and it takes a series of photos at a time interval that you specify. Great for seeing changes to lighting, or watching a slow process happening. Being able to take short videos when the need arises is useful, because I will carry this camera with me all day, whereas I only carry a video camera when I know I'm going to be using it. Learning the meanings of the icons on the function-wheel is recommended, because a couple of them can be non-obvious when you haven't got the manual to hand. I like the CompactFlash card format - fashion dictates that it is being overtaken by the smaller ones (SD, MMC etc) but it's much easier to handle when you're clumsy, and it's not as if the camera would be be smaller otherwise - any smaller and the camera would be hard to handle! And I've never been one to follow fashion... I'm an awkward customer and I almost never find a device that's perfect for me, but overall I recommend this camera to anyone who wants to take decent pictures and can put up with the couple of drawbacks I mention.

DYSON DC07 Allergy/Animal Blue Bagless Upright Cleaner 3 Tools Free Postage

    Great machine!
The Dyson DC07 seems to be the "Series 2 Landrover" of the vacuum cleaner world. It's old, but so well designed that there are a lot of them out there doing a great job! It has some quirks, as Dysons do, but it works really well and is easy to fix if something does break or wear out (I recommend getting the 3rd-party repair manual that specifically deals with this model). I have been using mine to clean out 70+ years of very fine dust (mainly soot) from my loft, and it's so fine that the washable pre-motor filter and the "lifetime" HEPA filter actually last about 2 hours' cleaning time before needing washing/replacing, but then this isn't designed as an industrial machine so the fact that it does the job at all is a nice surprise. If you're looking for a general purpose cleaner (get some of the extra tool-sets for most versatility) at a decent 2nd-hand price, I recommend the DC07.
Hi-Speed 7 Ports 3.0 USB Hub Charger UK AC Power Adapter Splitter for PC Laptop

    Nicely designed
Very nice way to do a USB hub - all connectors on the top so it will sit flat on a desk, unlike the ones which are "tower" shaped with connectors on two sides. The power switches and blue lights are useful and it all looks very neat. Only niggle is that the power supply that comes with it is only rated at 1A which is a bit meagre for seven ports, so I got another rated at 2A to use instead, and even this makes it suitable as a Hub, using memory sticks and perhaps one external 2.5" disk drive, but not really as a multi-port *charger* for a lot of phone, tablets, etc. - I'd get a 4A supply if I was going to use it for that.
