Logitech Harmony Smart Control for iPhone/Android Mobile Phone
    Jun 17, 2016
    Underrated
When I discovered that Harmony Hub based remotes could control both my Roku streaming stick and My Wii U, I started looking into them- the lack of IR input had left them out in the cold with my (otherwise great) Harmony 700. I originally got the Harmony Elite- the touchscreen was attractive, and so was the charging dock. Using it I realized that the touchscreen wasn't the great feature I had expected. It attracted accidental input and if I needed to go deeper into functions i.e. into device-level controls rather than activity controls, that the iOS and Android app was the best way to go. One review of the Smart Control I had read mentioned that it only had three activity buttons- this made it a non-starter for me, but once I found out that these could be configured for short and long presses, thereby doubling the number of usable activities, it dawned on me that the Elite had been an expensive mistake. Back to Amazon it went and I found this at half the price on eBay. There's no charging dock because it doesn't need one- it uses a watch battery that apparently lasts a year and it's a light but solid handset with well arranged buttons. I've said it's easy to programme- but I should footnote that with the fact that programming isn't the strongest point of the Harmony experience- the desktop app is pretty ropey and programming things through the touch app, while better, is a fairly plodding process. I got my father a Harmony but I wouldn't have dreamt of leaving him to programme it himself. Once it's done, however, it's pretty much done and what you're left with is a five star product that does exactly what it should.
