Sony CRT TVs are a bargain at the moment
19 of 19 found this helpful This is a big HEAVY TV by present standards, but if you can put up with the weight and bulk of the set then this is a real bargain. With most people going for flat panel LCD and plasma teles now there are lots of very good deals to be had on eBay from private sellers and eBay shops.
The picture quality of this Sony KD-32DX40U is excellent and the Dolby virtual surround sound is about the best I have experienced from loudspeakers built in to a TV. Setup is largely automatic with the aid of the on screen menus. You only have to press a couple of keys on the remote and the set does the rest, tuning both analogue and Freeview channels for you. The Freeview channels are listed in a programme guide that you can scroll through to see whats on. While you are doing this you can still see the channel you were last watching in the top right corner of the screen thanks to the 'picture in picture' feature.
The set came with a large stand with enough room to house Sky box, DVD, VCR etc with room to spare. There are features on the KD-32DX40U that I will probably never use, but all the ones I do use are easy to access and use. The Sony Trinitron picture tube takes some beating for picture quality. Compared to many of the low to mid priced LCD TVs that I have seen, this Sony CRT set has way better picture quality, and as this set goes for £100 to £150 on eBay ( I payed £105 for mine) represents outstanding value.
It has all the interconnections that I require, two SCART sockets, an S-Video socket, audio and video inputs via phone sockets ( I use these for watching a camcorder), stereo audio output phono sockets and a stereo headphone socket. It even has a modem socket to allow updates of the TV's software, although I have not investigated what is involved to use this facility.
The down side is the weight of the beast. It is a two man lift to move it and it is quite deep. An estate car is handy if you are going to transport it, which is quite likely as most sellers listings say 'collection only'.
So, all in all, a bit of a bargain for the fit and strong!

A very useful tool and excellent value for money.
The touch screen is very small, but still usable. Use a stylus for selecting from the menu or moving the cursor and it makes life much easier. Once you get the hang of it you will wonder how you ever got by without it. For setting up antennas it is superb, giving a graphical representation of what the adjustments are doing, whether to the antenna itself or through the adjustment of an ATU. There are tutorials on You Tube that show how to use it and there is software available to allow a larger, annotated graphical interface on a PC or laptop. Look for nanoVNASharp or nanoVNASaver software, both downloadable off the web. So far I have only used it at HF and VHF up to 145 MHz, where it worked perfectly.It would also be useful for plotting filter response curves, but I haven't tried that yet.

It makes light work of desoldering components from the older feed through hole type of printed circuit boards, so much better than the one shot, spring loaded solder suckers I have used in the past.It comes with a variety of nozzles to suit different size component leads. It is tempearature conrolled and quite fast to heat up to the selected operating temperature.The filters that catch the solder droplets are easy to remove for cleaning or replacement.I have used this desoldering station for well over a year and it still works well. It comes supplied with cleaning probes for the tip, a sponge and a good quality IEC mains lead.Highly recommended.
