Good Deal: HydroBlu Versa Flow with 3L Reservoir and Bucket Kit
Very good water filtration system for ultralight backpacking and mountaineering. HydroBlu is comparable to Sawyer mini but this set up has the advantage of including a 3L reservoir/bladder that opens at the top and can be used to drink from directly (like a CamelBak, tubing and bite valve included) or used as a gravity feed. 3L Bladder is made from flexible, siliconized material which is bigger (3L) and appears to be much more flexible and durable than the standard Sawyer Mini bladders (that are small and some hikers complain that they delaminate quickly and are cheaply made.) In the case of the Sawyer, some hikers end up replacing the the bags that come standard with the Mini or Squeeze with larger Sawyer, Evernew or Platypus bags-- at extra cost. Time will tell if the VersaBlu reservoir will last, but it "feels" more like a "Camelbak" than a Dollar Store collapsible water bottle. Another advantage of the HydroBlu is that it is a top loading reservoir bag, so you can use a pre-filter (like a bandana or get fancy and use aquarium filter floss) inside the bag itself, to mechanically screen particulates out of the filter and extend filter life. The HydroBlu "in" connector has a dual connection: nozzle or thread. Like the Sawyer, the "in" thread matches perfectly on the hiker standard Smartwater bottle, so you can put "dirty water" in your bottle but suck out "clean" water through the "out" nozzle. This particular kit includes a bucket adapter with additional (grey) tubing, which is super handy if you plan to make additional mods (tornado, carbon filter, etc-- search youtube for mods). Possible improvements: There are very vague instructions so it wasn't clear where to locate the filter between the reservoir and the bite valve (user preference). Also, the "out" nozzle is a hair bigger than the nozzle on the Sawyer so it doesn't fit perfectly onto a Smartwater squirt adapter (nipple?) for backflushing. No backflushing equipment is included (like the Sawyer plunger). Easy fixes for all of these and not a deal breaker for me (I never use the Sawyer plunger!) Conclusion: the cost of this kit is about what the Sawyer squeeze costs but HydroBlu (which is the size of a Sawyer mini) comes with extra features (reservoir, bite valve, bucket adapter) that take the guess work out of modding. Looks to be a good product at a great price.
