A most engaging and informative read about Tolstoy
I'm a general reader wanting to find out about why Tolstoy is so highly regarded. This book was fascinating to read; the author's prose, her selection of pictures, as well as her organization of material with ample documentation made this a fascinating read for me!

An Important Next Step for Herbie Hancock
First the negative: I bought this mostly because I wanted to hear Jerry Dodgion improvising on alto saxophone. He always played impeccably with great humor and warmth, and, I felt, a San Francisco beatnik aura. Of course hearing Thad Jones improvise on flugelhorn would also be a treat. But Herbie reserves most blowing for himself and a little for Ron Carter.
That said, Herbie's orchestration for alto flute, bass trombone, and flugelhorn are beautiful, and his soloing is magnificent. This was his first record after Maiden Voyage although it came two years later. It was cutting edge at the time, and it stands up as great music. It includes tender musical reflections on childhood innocence, but also intense meditations on the race riots of the time.

A Wonder of Straight Ahead Jazz
The professor in a saxophone workshop at a jazz camp used samples of Cannonball on this album to illustrate his points. The samples awed us and inspired us, and I had to order this album when I got home. The CD could be used to the same effect on a class in a jazz singing class. It is also just a great great and fun jazz album to listen to.
