indispensable supplement to the mini-series!
for all the passionate fans of bbc's 1995 "p&p", this is a must-have. it gives all the details: from the forming of the miniseries idea to the costumes to the music to the (most interesting) thoughts of the characters (including colin firth and jennifer ehle, which is more than can be said for the "bonus" features of the various dvd versions of this miniseries that have been put out in recent years). i own 2 of these books (my 11 year old wanted her very own copy) and still enjoy rereading it. if you like this version of "p&p" (i will watch no other version, since this is the definitive one and others will simply be a waste of time), then you *need* this book.

funny travel guides
too bad we don't have such well-turned phrases anymore in modern writing. this is a double-book series, ostensibly written as travel guides. the first takes us around the thames river via a boat and the 3 hapless men who endeavored to go on this type of vacation. they suffer all sorts of difficulties (mostly brought on by their incompetence) and the writing is very amusing. the second guide takes us around germany via bicycles, and there are a lot of funny bits, but not as entertaining as the first book. there are too many nationalistic generalizations, which were acceptable at the time this was written (1900), and actually foreshadows the 1st world war with germany, but still is almost offensive for the modern reader. nevertheless, i am glad i was able to read both by this clever author with his deadpan humor.

fun, light reading
i hadn't read the harley quin series before, but i wanted to be thorough in my agatha christie reading. i wasn't disappointed. these have sort a mystical overtone to them (not as much as some other "ghost" stories she's written which i am not a fond of) but they are still of the mystery-solving genre. the stories are short and fun to read. i liked this as well as the other book in the series, "the harlequin tea set."
