Reducing the rim thickness will be necessary at least on A/C couplings.
A zinc alloy, commonly known as die cast or pot metal, is a good option for this type of tool — a bit harder/more durable than many common aluminum alloys (most 6XXX and lower), comparable to mild steel but without the rust factor. It's sturdy, not likely to bend or fracture and the pivot point is solid but free.
The main problem is the rims are too thick to insert into the coupler to depress the release spring clip. After many varied attempts I was not able to find a technique to overcome the issue without resorting to using only one side of the tool and something else on the other. Several pieces of split and shaped pvc work much better, are easy to make, cheap, and expendable. Reducing the rim thickness will be necessary at least on A/C couplings.
