Notting Hill
A lovely ending. Julia Roberts rises above the material. A film significant in that it marks the end of Hugh Grant's romantic lead career. If you ever have a Brit with floppy hair parking your car, ask if his first name is Hugh.

Love, Actually
Emma Thompson makes this movie worthwhile. The only actress who can express emotions through subtle facial expression more brilliantly than Emma is her sister, Sophie. Liam Neeson brilliantly (and ironically) portrays a griefing widower trying to help his young stepson win over a young girl in a sweet subplot that culminates with a rush to the airport (never saw that one coming),but is still both charming and entertaining.

Compelling Musical?
South Pacific was a musical that I never really liked until I saw this filmed production on television. The acting is excellent. The cast is formidable and the story takes on a much more serious tone in the hands of director Richard Pearce. The song, Happy Talk, is omitted from this production, which suited me fine, as that song is an irritation. The order of the songs is changed, but works better with this approach to the story of American sailors on a South Seas island during World War II. Unlike the 1958 film version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, most of the actors in this production sing for themselves. Glenn Close, one of the film's producers, stars as Nellie Forbush and brings a depth to the charcter that is not seen in most productions. Harry Connick, Jr. is most watchable as the handsome and conflicted Lt. Cable. Worth a look.
