Compelling reading from beginning to end
I was given my first copy of The Physician; I looked at the size of the book and thought, heavens I'm not going to get into that. then I started to read and from page one I was hooked. Historical Novels were not the type of book I had been accustomed to reading, but it was a compelling read. I passed the book on to a relation, who in turn circulated it around her family and I never got it back.Since then I have purchased three other copies, read the book 3 times and loaned the book to friends, without them being returned. This last copy I intend to keep for myself.
The theme of the book, is of a young family orphaned in the 11th century and how they get split up; the story follows the eldest as he is taken on by a barber/surgeon and how they travel the country, selling quack medicine and performing minor surgery as well as entertaining the crowds. The boy grows into a man and takes over the practice when barber dies; not content with travelling and practicing in this country; his craving for medical knowledge takes him to the middle east via a waggon train. Then his adventures really start, getting into wars as a surgeon and enrolling into a best medical school in Persia; finally marrying a fellow traveller and returning to Scotland and setting up his own medical practice
