2 design weak points
1 of 1 found this helpful There are two issues with Bachman EZ track turnouts. The wire spring that actually moves the points of the switch is not strong enough. When switching to the closed (or curve) position, the outer point sometimes does not remain against the straight rail, allowing that wheel to go between the straight rail and the switch point, derailing the car. Secondly, the end of the outer point is so thin it is easily broken off. And I have one car that will not go through the switch from the single track end because the wheel rolls over the point and falls into the gap, even when the point is against the outer rail. For half of the length of the moving point, Bachmann for half of the length of the point, cuts off half of the width of the rail, leaving a very thin slice, which creates a gap between the point and the outer rail. Slightly bending the point to increase the pressure against the outer rail did not work. After several attempts to get the bend correct, the point broke off. So I had to buy this switch to replace the broken one. The points should have a thicker, gradual taper, not ending in metal so thin it is only a bit thicker than foil and allows the wheels to roll over the point and fall in between the rails. And to allow a thicker point, the outer rail could have a slight indentation to accept the thicker point thereby eliminating the gap that is immediately next to the end of the point . Would I recommend it? There is no choice if you need a switch.
