6 of 6 found this helpful All the reviews accurately reflect the utility and outright usefulness of the 296. I too cannot believe Garmin would discointinue this unit. I have flown behind this unit since it came out and have owned at least three of them. Even when out of warranty Garmin repaired for free (what a great statement for their company and product service. I am an instrument rated commercial pilot with dother ratings and have an IFR certified panbel in my plane including an IFR certified GPS (GNC 300) and still use the 296 regularly. This unit makes a great backup for other aviation instruments as well, not to mentidon its auto and marine applications using Map Source software. If I needed another unit I would buy this one. I am not related to the seller, see my feedback at Frank5105. I cant write this review without mentioning the nearest function for pilots, in a matter of three seconds a pilot can choose between all his (or her)landing alternatives in a matter of three seconds. This feature alone could be a lifesaver.
