Excellent realization of a real-life Berlin woman's diary of the last days of WWII and first days of the postwar.
Very well done, mostly faithful to the book, but omits a lot, understandable since the film is already quite long at two hours. "Entertaining" is not a word anybody would use in connection with the final days of the war in Berlin, but the performances are excellent, as is the set (one block in bombed-out Berlin). The Germans speak German, the Russians (played by real Russians) speak Russian (or Ukrainian or whatever). Subtitles for both are in German, so to appreciate the movie you must be able understand or read German or have read the book in advance. To play the DVD you need a Region-2 player or a Region-free one.
The book is "Eine Frau en Berlin: Tagebuch -- Aufzeichnungen vom 20. April bis 22. Juni 1945"; the English version is "A Woman in Berlin". It's a diary that describes what happened each day during those two months.
The only reason I give the film 4 starts instead of 5 is that it homes in on the more brutal or sensational episodes and underplays the day-to-day survival strategies that were 95% of the diary, which for me were more interesting. Also, some of the characters are reduced to cartoonish stereotypes, who were far more complex in the book.

Excellent book about the first three postwar years in Frankfurt, Germany.
As a teenager I lived in Frankfurt 1959-61. It had mostly recovered from WWII but not totally. I wanted to learn more about the early occupation and recovery. This book (which was recommended to me by a German lady who lives in Frankfurt) tells the whole story in great detail and also has quite a few photos. I ordered the English translation, but I received the original German version, which I would have ordered if I had seen one, since I can read German.
